Stage 1.
Food is chewed and mixed with saliva. Then, the tongue pushes against the hard palate and rolls the bolus into the pharynx.
Stage 2.
Swallowing reflex is initiated by receptors in the pharyngeal opening while the epiglottis closes off of the trachea.
Stage 3.
Peristalsis transports only food from the esophagus into the stomach.
