Bone Terms.
Angle- Where a bone forms a convex curvature / the point at which two
intersecting boreders or surfaces converge.
Condyle- Rounded process that
usually articulates with another bone.
Sinus- Cavity within a bone.
Crest- Ridgelike projection of a
bone.
Epicondyle- Projection situated above a condyle.
Fissure- A cleft or
groove.
Foramen- An opening through a bone that usually serves as a
passageway for blood vessels, nerves, or ligaments.
Fossa- A relatively deep
pit of depression.
Tuberosity- Elevation or protuberance of a bone with a rough surface
Head- Enlargement on the end of a bone.
Meatus- Tubelike passageway within a bone.
Notch- Where a bone forms a concave
curvature / an indentation on the edge of a bone.
Process- A prominent
projection on a bone.
Tubercle- Small, knob-like process.
Spine- Thornlike
projection.
Trochanter- Relatively large process, only found on the
femur.
Osteoblasts- Make up the bone.
Collagen- Makes the bone flexible.
Calcium phosphate- Makes the bone hard.
Periosteum- Outer surface of the shaft is a tough covering of fibrous tissue. (Helps repair bone tissue and allows tendons and ligaents to attach to the bone).
Diaphysis- Long, straight portion of the bone is the "shaft". Hollow, and where bone marrow is found.
Medullary cavity- Middle of the bone.
Epiphysis- Two ends of the bone.
Metaphysis- Flaring part of bone between the diaphysis and the epiphysis.
Epiphyseal plate- Growth plate.
Compact Bone- Outer portion.
Spongey bone- Where red bone marrow is found.
